2024 WNBA All-Star Voting: Skimming the Crème de la Crème from the Cream of the Crop

Jun 27, 2024

Choosing six frontcourt players and four backcourt players for the WNBA All-Star Game is never an easy task and casting a media ballot in 2024 feels almost daunting.

The level of competition increases year over year, the number of roster spots has not increased, and elite veterans continue playing at a high level against breakout rookies. And then there are the cultural narratives surrounding members of the 2024 WNBA Draft class. An All-Star Game is a celebration of the league’s best players, a resume-builder for those athletes, and hard-earned media visibility which for so long was withheld. Voting for WNBA All-Star is a duty we take seriously.

WNBA All-Star wish list

The quintessential WNBA All-Star is a force. She is a difference-maker who commands attention with her play and on-court attitude; her game benefits her team. A WNBA All-Star strives to be the best; she wants every individual accolade, award, milestone, record, and then some, but she does not chase these at the expense of her team’s success. In the WNBA, an All-Star has an astronomical basketball IQ and she has to be efficient.

Our voting process

To separate the cream from the very elite crop, we did not consider players who led the league in turnovers or personal fouls for games played through June 23, 2024.

Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever, thus, was an early cut: She led the WNBA in total turnovers (100) and turnovers per game (5.6). Aliyah Boston, also of the Fever, was also disqualified from our vote because she led the league in personal fouls. An All-Star protects possessions and stays in the game to help her team.

To separate thecrème de la crème from the cream of the crop, we examined howplayers arrive at their production tallies. Positive efficiency and plus/minus weighed heavily in players’ favor. We also put gold stars on players who excelled in an area of the game that is routinely dominated by another position – such as Chennedy Carter of the Chicago Sky, who has the fifth-highest field-goal shooting percentage and the top four are frontcourt players. Finally, we did not consider areas in which only slight margins separated the best players in the rankings. Some of these elements were free throws, steals, and blocks.

After much review, backtracking, second-guessing – repeat – the Hard Screen cast her media ballot for:

FRONTCOURT

A’ja Wilson

Alyssa Thomas

Angel Reese

Breanna Stewart

Dearica Hamby

Napheesa Collier

BACKCOURT

Chennedy Carter

Jackie Young

Jewell Loyd

Sabrina Ionescu
